FSSAI food packaging rules affect restaurants, takeaways and cloud kitchens because packaging touches food, carries information and protects the product during delivery. Operators must use suitable food-grade materials and comply with the current packaging and labelling framework.
Start with official rules
Review the current regulations and amendments on the FSSAI regulations page. Requirements vary depending on whether food is freshly prepared for immediate delivery, pre-packed for retail, sold through an e-commerce channel or manufactured under another category.
Packaging-selection checklist
- Food-grade material suitable for direct contact
- Compatible with hot, cold, oily, acidic or frozen food
- Strong enough for stacking and transport
- Tamper-evident where operationally appropriate or required
- Leak-resistant without contaminating adhesives or inks
- Purchased from a traceable supplier with specifications
- Stored clean, dry and protected from pests
Match packaging to the food
| Risk | Control question |
|---|---|
| Hot curry | Is the container rated for the filling temperature and oil? |
| Fried food | Can steam escape enough to protect quality without compromising safety? |
| Cold dessert | Will the seal and material remain stable during chilled transport? |
| Acidic chutney | Is the material compatible with acidity? |
| Delivery drink | Can the lid resist leakage and tampering? |
What information may be required?
The answer depends on the product and sale format. Pre-packaged food can require prescribed declarations such as name, ingredient and allergen information, net quantity, date marking, FSSAI details and other particulars. Restaurant and e-commerce menu disclosure rules may also apply. Do not copy a retail label onto every takeaway box without checking classification.
Allergen communication
Packaging does not cure weak allergen control. Maintain accurate recipes, prevent cross-contact where promised, train staff and provide required information through the appropriate menu, label or digital channel. Never state “allergen-free” unless the process can support the claim.
Cloud-kitchen dispatch SOP
- Match ticket, dish and customer instructions.
- Use the approved container and portion.
- Close and seal without touching food-contact surfaces unnecessarily.
- Label or mark the order as required.
- Separate hot, cold, drink and allergen-sensitive components.
- Record handover time and rider/order identity where the system allows.
- Investigate leakage, temperature and tampering complaints.
Supplier documentation
Keep invoices, material specifications, declarations or certificates supplied, batch information where available and complaint history. If a container deforms, transfers odour, leaks or causes injury, quarantine remaining stock and contact the supplier.
Sustainability and legal restrictions
Single-use plastic restrictions and local waste rules can affect permitted materials. “Biodegradable,” “compostable” and “eco-friendly” are not interchangeable claims. Obtain evidence for environmental claims and verify central, state and municipal requirements.
Packaging cost control
Calculate full packaging per order: container, lid, bag, cutlery, napkin, seal, label and wastage. Include it in the menu-pricing formula and delivery profitability—not only food cost.
Important
This overview does not replace product-specific regulatory advice. Confirm the current FSSAI packaging, labelling, e-commerce and plastic-waste requirements for your exact food and sale format.
