Restaurant Staff Training Checklist for Indian Restaurants

A restaurant staff training checklist should define what each employee must know, demonstrate and record before working independently. Training is not a one-time orientation; it is an operating system reinforced through observation, coaching and refreshers.

First-day induction

  • Restaurant values, concept and guest promise
  • Job description, reporting line, schedule and attendance rules
  • Uniform, grooming, handwashing and illness reporting
  • Emergency exits, fire response, first aid and incident reporting
  • Anti-harassment, respectful workplace and grievance process
  • Personal belongings, mobile phone and confidentiality rules

Service-team training

  • Ethical recommendations and upselling
  • Complaint handling using listen, acknowledge, solve and thank
  • Bill presentation, payment security and farewell

Our waiter skills guide and complaint-handling guide provide practical coaching material.

Cash and POS controls

Train logins, table transfer, discounts, voids, refunds, complimentary items, cash drops, closing reconciliation and data privacy. Employees should know their approval limits and who can authorise exceptions.

Seven-day role-training plan

  1. Day 1: induction and safety.
  2. Day 2: shadow a trained employee.
  3. Day 3: perform basic tasks under supervision.
  4. Day 4: product and menu test.
  5. Day 5: peak-shift practice with coach.
  6. Day 6: corrective feedback and repeat weak tasks.
  7. Day 7: practical sign-off or extended training plan.

Training record template

Record employee name, role, topic, trainer, date, method, test result, practical observation, corrective training, sign-off and next refresher. A signature alone does not prove competence; include an observable assessment.

30-day manager review

Review punctuality, hygiene, recipe/service accuracy, teamwork, guest feedback, speed, safety and record completion. Agree on two measurable priorities and a follow-up date.

Keep training alive

  • Five-minute pre-shift lessons
  • Weekly tasting and menu quiz
  • Monthly safety drill
  • Coaching after audit failures or complaints
  • Refresher when a recipe, law, supplier or machine changes

Build these routines into your restaurant SOP templates.
